Safer manual handling of people training

With over 900,000 working days lost in 2014 as a result of manual handling injuries, one of the biggest challenges in the caring profession is making patient handling safer for the patient and the care worker, addressing this challenge with excellent training means the risk of injury can be reduced.

The SSTAR Manual Handling of People training programme, designed to comply with Manual Handling Regulations, requires all staff involved in the handling and moving of people to be trained in accordance with current best practice. SSTAR training covers the following topics: regulations, anatomy and physiology of the spine, safe handling practice, types of handling equipment (including mobile hoist with slings) and risk assessment.

The main focus of the training is on the practical techniques and the use of the handling equipment specific to the candidates' care setting.
