Move over Masterchef - Sunrise and Gracewell chefs battle it out in national competition with Premier Foods

June 14, 2017

This summer, Sunrise Senior Living and Gracewell Healthcare are joining forces with Premier Foods, a leading supplier of quality British food, to find the best Care Chef of the Year.

Sunrise Senior Living and Gracewell Healthcare both provide luxury, tailored elderly care, and pride themselves on the high quality food that their residents can enjoy.

The competition will see chefs from the 46 Sunrise Senior Living and Gracewell Healthcare homes across the country enter both a main course and a dessert, and a dysphagic version of each dish, before the competition is whittled down to five finalists, who will then battle it out for the grand prize.

The chefs will be required to cook to an assigned budget, and when it comes to the live final, have only two hours to produce their dishes. Dishes must also include some of the best known products that Premier Foods produce, such as Bisto and Ambrosia Custard.

As well as creating excitement among the cooking teams at Sunrise and Gracewell, the competition provides an opportunity for chefs to develop new recipes and refresh their menus, helping the chefs to find inspiration and share ideas amongst themselves.

The chief judge will be Andy Jones, Chair of the Hospital Caterers Association, who will be judging the dishes not only on their taste and nutrition - but also on the appeal of the all-important dysphagic dishes.

Once they have submitted their entries, the five finalists will be invited to a live cook-off at Premier Food Headquarters in St. Albans on the 9th August.chef

The winning chef will not only receive a set of Wusthof cooking knives to commemorate their win, but also a £1000 prize from Premier Foods to spend on their communities.

Christopher Dean, Director of Dining and Procurement at Sunrise Senior Living said:

“This is a very exciting competition for the whole of Sunrise Senior Living and Gracewell Healthcare. It gives our catering staff across the group the chance to demonstrate the high quality of food they provide on a daily basis for all our residents, and the skill, creativity and knowledge that goes into it.”

Mark Taylor, Foodservice Customer Collector at Premier Foods said:

“Premier Foods is very excited to be part of this competition with Sunrise Senior Living and Gracewell Healthcare. At Premier Foods, we pride ourselves on supplying quality ingredients that contribute to healthy lifestyles, and the chefs at Sunrise and Gracewell use them to full effect.

“We already work so closely with the care chefs at Sunrise Senior Living and Gracewell Healthcare by providing their dysphagic training, and it will be great to see what dishes the chefs come up with.”

Sophie Murray, Head of Nutrition and Hydration at Sunrise Senior Living said:

“It is important to recognise that mealtimes are about more than simply consuming nutritious food – they are also social occasions which our residents, dysphagic or not, should enjoy.

This competition is all about celebrating food and highlights how seriously Sunrise and Gracewell take providing high-quality, nutritious, and delicious meals for all of our residents. I’m sure it will inspire some imaginative and exciting contributions from our chefs.”
