Unplanned Care Congress: February 2020, London

Unplanned Care Congress - info card

Reducing trips to Accident and Emergency is the focus of the Unplanned Care Congress: Improving Flow & Reducing Statistics, which aims to help healthcare professionals reduce the 23.8 million A&E attendances which were seen in 2017-18. Following on from three highly successful and well followed urgent care conferences, Convenzis is organising this must-attend event which takes place in London in February 2020. Across the NHS, staff work around the clock to deliver the best possible care to more patients than ever before, but it’s becoming increasingly difficult as demand continues to rise. Some current urgent and emergency care stats bring home how important this issue is:  • In 2017-18 there were 23.8 million attendances in Accident and Emergency. This is an increase of 2 per cent compared with 2016-17 and 22 per cent since 2008-09 • England had the second-highest reported A&E attendance rate amongst the home nations with 27,639 attendances per 100,000 population • 4-hour waits in A&E rose to a new high with 18.5% of people attending major departments experiencing long delays compared with 16.5% in 2017. Attendances rose by 0.6% in 2018 • The waiting list for consultant-led treatment rose to a new high in 2018, and the 18-week treatment target was not met NHS England is currently driving some key initiatives throughout the UK to help reduce these statistics and new rapid care measures – which will provide people experiencing a mental health crisis with treatment under an hour – are among a raft of proposed clinical improvements that aim to deliver rapid assessment and treatment for patients. The SDEC (same-day emergency care) care model aims to benefit both patients and the healthcare system by reducing waiting times and unnecessary hospital admissions. Infection Prevention Society Care Home Special Interest Group

Infection Prevention Society Care Home Staff Checking Blood Pressure On Resident

Care Homes have an important role in the epidemiology of antibiotic resistant  bacteria due to the frequent admissions to hospital. It is important to remember that some of the bacteria we are preventing the spread of have a mortality rate attached to them and not necessarily just harmless colonising. This is going to be increasingly important because we are going to see more antibiotic resistant bacteria and need to act to prevent infections and onward transmission. The Infection Prevention Society (IPS) is an independent charity with a 2,000 strong membership network of healthcare professionals with an interest in IPC. The IPS Care Home SIG was formed in February 2019 and aims to raise the profile of IPC in care homes and promote best practice whilst providing members with networking opportunities and a forum for sharing their expertise. Each year the Society holds their conference and this year, it is taking place in Liverpool at the ACC from the 22 – 24 September. Leading experts in their field will present on the latest current and emerging threats and state- of- the-art research to help improve your team, your practice and your patients’/ clients’ outcomes. There will be a comprehensive series of presentations, meet-the-expert sessions and specialist streams. Infection Prevention 2019 is the premier educational event for all those working and interested in infection prevention and control. This year the Society will celebrate 60 years of Infection Control Nursing and hope that you can attend and take part in an exciting, educational and practice- enhancing conference. Care home’s mini-festival inspired by Glastonbury

Singers at care home’s mini-festival inspired by Glastonbury

A GLASTONBURY inspired mini-festival took place at a Tyneside care home as part of Care Home Open Day. The annual mega-festival at Worthy Farm, in Somerset, which took place last week, gave residents and staff at a care home over 300-miles away the idea of holding their own event. Music and arts activities were available to residents and visitors at Waverley Lodge Care Home, in Lemington, near Newcastle, on Care Home Open Day, which sees homes across the country welcoming the public through their doors.  Singer Christina Rosemont performed classics from the 1950s to 1970s in the home’s garden – with residents enjoying the sunshine while listening to some of their favourite songs. Resident Betty Reay said: “The music was really great and it was lovely to sit in the sunshine.” Similar to Glastonbury’s arts installations, residents also took part in arts and crafts activities, weaving baskets and painting stones found on the beach at Whitley Bay. Resident Dorothy Newton said: “I’ve never painted rocks before. It was good fun.” Michelle Park, activities coordinator at Waverley Lodge Care Home, said: “With the weather forecast looking great for Care Home Open Day, we thought why not run our own mini-festival inspired by Glastonbury. “It was such a brilliant day and it was great to welcome family members and other visitors. “Christina put on a fantastic performance in the garden and the residents really enjoyed creating their own designs when doing the basket weaving and painting rocks. “Our own version of a music and arts festival was a lot of fun, with the activities also proving very therapeutic and calming for the residents. “A massive thank you to everyone who came along and made it such a special day.” Waverley Lodge Care Home is part of the Hill Care Group. Get to know your neighbours with a Big Lunch

Big Lunch campaign at a Care Home

Live-in care provider celebrate their community by treating residents to a Big Lunch with their neighbours.  The Big Lunch is the biggest annual get together for neighbours and aims to bring communities together whilst enjoying food. This year on 1-2 June, Promedica24 supported the campaign, organised by The Eden Project, by providing clients with gift vouchers to hold their own Big Lunch.  Edgar Moss, a Promedica24 resident from Fordingbridge, Dorset, thanked the team for his voucher and said the offer was one he could not refuse.  He added: “You will see from the photos that I had five good friends, my care worker and daughter, Rozalind at my Big Lunch. You can see me cutting the decorated cake and the single candle is for the first time we have had such a party. Maybe next year we will have two candles? Once again, many thanks for our very enjoyable party!” Promedica24 treated clients across the country to Big Lunch vouchers and also held a Big Lunch at their head office in Watford, for staff and invited clients to enjoy a sociable feast.  Earlier this year, The Big Lunch commissioned research that showed more than half of people in the UK (36 million people) feel distant from their neighbours, and 75 percent felt there were barriers to getting closer to them. Kerry Stevens, care manager at Promedica24, said: “Last year, 4.5 million friendships were formed because of the Big Lunch and with loneliness and isolation on the increase in the UK, we want to be able to be a part of reducing this whenever we can.  “We strive to ensure those we support are able to maintain their independence and links to the community.” Promedica24 is Europe’s largest provider of live-in care. The support on offer helps to preserve people’s independence for as long as possible and each care package is tailored to meet an individual’s needs with staff trained to provide more specialist support when required.  For more information, call 0800 086 8686 or visit www.Promedica24.co.uk.
